The Jersey City Fire Department became a paid department on June 6, 1871. The career firefighters realized the need to protect their jobs, increase wages and ensure the department provided adequate equipment. On October 9, 1950, the Jersey City Fire Officers and Firefighters chartered with the International Association of Fire Fighters as Local 1064 & Local 1066 respectfully.
The association began working with department administration and City Hall immediately to fulfill its mission. They worked diligently with the Fire Chief to find an amicable solution and a city ordinance was passed to ensure the rights of the firefighters. Today, there are more than 633 members of the Jersey City Division of Fire. The Jersey City Fire Union’s are proud to serve its members, the 250,000 plus citizens of Jersey City, and all visitors to the city.
